Taking Control of Our Biology: Alternative Medicines Regaining Acclaim

In a world full of prescription drugs made in labs that can cause life-threatening side-effects, humans are once again turning back to the Earth in search of holistic remedies better suited for our biological chemistry. Alternative medicine, once prominent not only in India but the world several centuries ago, is gaining popularity once again as universities and colleges begin offering degree programs in various practices such as Ayurveda, acupuncture, aroma therapy, electro homeopathy, and even Feng Shui among others. In searching for quality medical care, individuals are exploring the realm of alternative medicines and discovering the benefits of natural, holistic healing.

Why We Are Turning Away From Prescription Drugs

The discovery and diversity of chronic diseases is on the rise as the human population expands and societal behavior becomes ever more stressful. The ease at which we can obtain food contributes to obesity. The chemicals in our food that’s not organic can contribute to heart, digestive, and other health problems. Our lungs are seemingly under attack whenever we enter a largely populated city and breathe in the toxins of smog. As we evolve, so do our health problems, and therefore so must our remedies. Right?

On the contrary; despite our ever-growing knowledge of the human body, our lab-created medicines do not usually fix the problems our bodies have stumbled upon. Instead, they’re designed to suppress a symptom, and in doing so, can cause other imbalances in the body that will then need another medication to control. This is why people are turning away from prescription drugs – the side-effects. None of us want to take three, four, five medications for one ailment. We seek solutions, not temporary relief, and unfortunately mainstream medicine (especially in Western society) does not solve our issues – they merely suppress them.

This is why those of us tired of eating pills; of experiencing problematic side-effects, are searching for better ways to keep our ailments under control or to eliminate them all-together. In exploring the ancient remedies found by our ancestors, we are better connecting to the roots of our health closer to finding solutions, not temporary relief.

The ‘Lord of Bhang’ and Science Finally Collide

Unfortunately, our very government can block vital progression in the development of health therapies. Take cannabis sativa, for example, AKA ganja. It remains illegal in India and yet ancient myths pertaining to Lord Shiva have noted its importance in maintaining balance on both a biological and spiritual level. Ganja has a long history in India (as well as other countries) dating back as early as 2,000 B.C. and yet today’s society will have you arrested for possessing it.

America, a valuable partner to India in trade and labor, is rapidly going forward, or far backwards depending on your perspective, with its use and acceptance of medical marijuana. Companies like Hytiva of Las Vegas are investing vast amounts of time and energy into public education of safe and wise cannabis use.

In August 2017, India issued its first license for a legal ganja growing facility in order to contribute to medical research surrounding the plant’s potential. The license holder is the Council of Scientific and Medical Research (CSIR) which will actively work in collaboration with the Bombay Hemp Company (BOHECO). There’s new hope that ganja won’t just be used for religious purposes, rather, also to help heal those in need of an alternative medicine suffering from profound ailments. There’s hefty proof, though not yet fully “verified” using the scientific method, that ganja can help in treating and controlling the symptoms of cerebral palsy, chronic pain, seizures & tremors, stress & anxiety – among a vast arrangement of other ailments, without creating harmful side-effects.

In fact, the worst side-effect of ganja is either paranoia or headache depending on which you personally consider to be worse than the other. And the best discovery of this plant, is that it is not addictive on a biological level, unlike opioids and other prescription drugs.

Profiting from Disease

The vast majority of alternative medicines simply lack scientific studies to validate them. Prescription drugs have become astoundingly popular because their effect as well as adverse side-effects are known, since scientific studies were conducted to create them unlike those of alternative medicines. However, there is no real profit in selling alternative medicines (in regards to the medical field) because they can be grown; crafted by anyone; holistic ingredients coming straight from the Earth. Prescription drugs are made in labs, and can only be sold on the market after verification in their effects using the scientific method. Since they’re controlled via prescription, costs can increase to pay for all the research associated with the drug, making prescription drugs profitable unlike alternative medicines.

Demand and Supply Pushes Progress

In any industry, demand for a product can determine the success of said industry, even in the realm of health and medicine. As the population gains education in both pharmaceuticals and holistic alternative medicines, there’s been a higher demand for the latter. Though a slow process, at least there is progress. Universities and collages continue to add to their medical agendas, incorporating more educational programs concerning alternative health regimes as the generations to come demand it.

In doing so, humans will gain not only a better understanding of natural chemicals, plants, and the like, but of our very own body chemistry as well. Instead of searching for a way to suppress a symptom, we can now begin to stumble upon actual cures and therapies derived directly from nature that will truly heal us instead of throwing our body’s well-being off balance.
